Tax calculator
Calculate a flat percentage tax on a price, then check the total including tax. You can also recover the net price and tax portion from a tax-inclusive amount. Replace the illustrative rate with the rate that applies to your transaction.
Edit any line below. Results update as you type. Use the same currency for all monetary amounts.
| @1 | net = 1000 | |
| @2 | taxRate = 20% | |
| @3 | tax = net * taxRate | |
| @4 | gross = net + tax | |
| @5 | netFromGross = gross / (1 + taxRate) | |
| @6 | taxFromGross = gross - netFromGross |
How to add or remove tax
Multiply the net amount by the tax rate to find the tax due. Add that tax to the net amount for the gross total. To remove tax from an inclusive price, divide the gross price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the same percentage from the gross price gives a different result.
Assumptions and limits
This is a single-rate percentage calculation for sales tax or VAT examples. It does not model income tax brackets, deductions, exemptions, or local rounding rules. The sample 20% rate is illustrative, not a jurisdiction-specific tax rate.
Can I use this for income tax?
You can estimate a flat percentage of income, but this worksheet does not calculate progressive income tax or determine your tax liability. Enter your own applicable rate for a simple percentage estimate.
