# isFinite() Function & Examples

## isFinite(): test for a finite value

**isFinite(x)** reports whether x is a finite numeric value, excluding positive infinity, negative infinity, and typically non-numeric values.

## Validation before arithmetic

Use it before totals, plotting, or serialization. A finite check prevents one exceptional input from contaminating [sum()](https://calcul.io/function/sum/index.md), [mean()](https://calcul.io/function/mean/index.md), and [variance()](https://calcul.io/function/variance/index.md).

## Related predicates

[isNaN()](https://calcul.io/function/isNaN/index.md) specifically recognizes “not a number”, while [isNumeric()](https://calcul.io/function/isNumeric/index.md) checks numeric type. Use [isBounded()](https://calcul.io/function/isBounded/index.md) for bound-oriented validation.

## Scope
